Having spent some time playing with buffers, microphones and the [record~] object in Max/MSP, i have got a patcher that records speech through a microphone, which can then be played back to listen to using a [groove~] object. However, trawling the internet once more, i discovered this range of Max/MSP patchers and externals by a guy who calls himself Snot Wong.
The one in particular that grabbed my attention was the auto talker backer, which plays back your speech as soon as you stop talking into a microphone. It is structured in a different way to how i usually build my patches, making much use of gates and trigger objects.
I will use it as a base for my project, as the algorithm that calculates how long to delay before playing back the speech is exactly what im after. However, the threshold he employs is a little too basic for my project. I’m going to use my microphone handler, including a custom built threshold function both of which i developed for the games module. I can also strip out the playback function, as i need the users speech to be recorded not played back straight away.
